In recent years, access to reliable electricity has become one of the most pressing needs across rural Africa. Aptech Africa, is taking bold steps to address this need, most recently by installing 11 minigrids in Burundi. This landmark project promises to transform communities, providing access to clean and sustainable energy for homes, schools, businesses, and essential services.
Burundi, has long struggled with energy access, particularly in rural areas where many communities remain off the grid. Over 80% of the population in rural regions lacks reliable electricity. The installation of these minigrids is a critical leap forward in closing this gap. Unlike large centralized grids, minigrids are easier and faster to deploy, making them ideal for remote and rural communities. Aptech Africa’s installation of 11 minigrids across different regions of Burundi means thousands of people will now have access to consistent, renewable electricity for the first time.
Aptech Africa installed 11 mini grids in 5 provinces of Burundi of 340kWp with a total battery bank storage of 2548.8kWh. Most of the systems are ground mounted and one was both roof and ground mounted using Ulica solar modules, Victron and Fronius inverters and Pylontech batteries. The systems are hybrid and the generator can be used alongside the installed system. A remote monitoring system was also installed to collect power output information, voltage, current and energy production.
Each minigrid installed by Aptech Africa will light up homes, schools, health centers, and local businesses, directly impacting the social and economic development of these communities. The minigrids will benefit more than 800 beneficiaries. With these minigrids, essential services such as hospitals and schools will benefit enormously.
